ARP Pro Series Main Stud Kit
For Chevy/GMC 6.6L Duramax LB7 & LLY (2001ā2005)
While head studs protect the top of your engine, the ARP 230-5401 Main Stud Kit is what protects the "bottom end." In high-performance Duramax builds, the crankshaft exerts massive force against the main caps. Factory main bolts can allow the caps to "walk" or vibrate, leading to fretting, bearing failure, and even block cracking.
This kit is a mandatory upgrade for any 2001ā2005 LB7 or LLY engine being built for high horsepower, heavy towing, or competition use.
Ā
Key Features & Benefits
-
Eliminates Main Cap Walk: By providing superior clamping force and a more precise fit than OEM bolts, these studs prevent the main caps from shifting under extreme loads.
- Premium 8740 Chrome Moly: Heat-treated in-house to a tensile strength of 200,000 psi, offering a massive increase in fatigue life over stock hardware.
- Superior Accuracy: Studs provide much more accurate torque readings than bolts because the fastener does not "twist" into the block; all clamping force is applied on a vertical axis.
- Includes Side Bolts: Unlike some basic kits, the 230-5401 is a comprehensive solution that includes the necessary cross-bolts (side bolts) to fully secure the Duramax main webbing.
- Protect Your Block: Studs reduce wear on the block's internal threads, which is critical for the longevity of the engine during future teardowns and rebuilds.
Ā
Why Main Studs are a "Must-Have"
When you increase boost and fueling, the downward force on the crankshaft increases exponentially. If the main caps are allowed to move even a fraction of a millimeter (cap walk), it destroys the oil film on your bearings and can lead to a snapped crankshaft or a ruined block.
The ARP 230-5401 kit is the foundation of a reliable Duramax build. It ensures that the rotating assembly stays perfectly aligned, allowing you to push your LB7 or LLY to its limit with confidence.
Installation Note: ARP recommends having the main bore checked by a machinist after installing main studs, as the increased clamping force can slightly alter the roundness of the main bearing bores (line honing may be required).
